Ramallah

Piece without a name

Training project with dance students from Ramallah

Many people associate Palestine as an eternal trouble spot where people are oppressed and violence and suffering are part of everyday life. Although this reality cannot be denied, there is also another side to Palestine - the cultural side. Palestine is a cradle of art, a country bursting with interest in music, dance and literature.

In August 2011, Royston Maldoom was invited to Ramallah to stage the dance theatre "Exile", with 130 young people from Palestine, based on the music by John Adams. The premiere of "Exile" occurred in Luxembourg in 2007. Motivated by the enthusiasm that emerged from the project, the idea for the programme "I can move" developed further and the young dancers who had participated in "Exile" became part of a more sustainable project. International choreographers were invited to work with the 20 trainees on a project basis.

During the 10 days I worked with the trainees, I created a piece about the dancer’s own personal life experiences; about their dreams and visions.
