Le Pas d 'Acier
Dance theatre in two acts by Sergej Prokefiev with 80 young dancers and the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra
‘The Steel Step’ from 1928 is one of the composer's lesser-known symphonies. The ballet centres on Soviet Russia, the collapse of the old, corrupt world and the revolutionaries' enthusiasm for industry and machines.
As it was 90 years ago, young people today were confronted with the rapidly changing phenomena within our society.
During a preparatory weekend in the countryside, the group were encouraged to share their individual opinions. "Only if I know where I belong, can I know where I want to go." A self-confident step into the future is only possible, when I can determine my present location.
The choreographic direction was inspired by these forest experiences.
"
...After five weeks of rehearsals, Eder and 80 dancers between the ages of 10 and 18 put together a varied production that harmonised perfectly with the grandiose sounds of the symphony orchestra...An important motif for the production was the theme: the future. The choreographies always reflect a development, they depict letting go, attraction and repulsion, the unknown and new discoveries. It was hardly noticeable that the performers had little or no dance experience before going to the rehearsals.... "
